PTFE versus PU: Properties, Advantages and Application Comparison

I. Overview

PTFE and PU are both high-performance materials widely used in industrial sealing applications, yet they exhibit distinct material characteristics. PTFE is renowned for low friction, wide temperature resistance and outstanding chemical stability, while PU features high elasticity, superior wear resistance, excellent extrusion resistance and good mechanical strength.

Therefore, in seal design, PTFE and PU are not simple substitutes for one another. Each material delivers unique advantages under different operating conditions. For hydraulic cylinders, pneumatic equipment, high-speed rotating machinery, high-temperature media and strongly corrosive media, material selection must be tailored according to pressure, speed, temperature, medium and motion type.

II. Key Performance Differences between PTFE and PU

PTFE’s greatest strengths lie in low friction and media resistance.

PTFE boasts an extremely low friction coefficient and good self-lubricating properties, making it suitable for dynamic sealing. Meanwhile, PTFE offers a broad operating temperature range. Standard PTFE sealing materials can serve applications from cryogenic environments to elevated temperatures and resist most industrial chemical media.

PU’s advantages are more focused on mechanical performance.

Polyurethane possesses high tensile strength, tear strength, elasticity and wear resistance, performing excellently in high-pressure hydraulic and pneumatic sealing. Thanks to its outstanding wear and extrusion resistance, PU has long been a vital material for dynamic seals such as piston seals, rod seals and wiper seals in hydraulic cylinders.

III. When to Prioritize PTFE?

PTFE is generally the preferred choice when equipment requires high temperature resistance, low friction, chemical compatibility or high-speed motion.

Typical applications:

- High-temperature hydraulic systems

- High-speed rotary seals

PTFE’s low-friction property makes it suitable for certain high-speed rotary sealing configurations.

- Chemical processing equipment

When the medium is corrosive, PTFE’s chemical stability provides a clear advantage.

- Cryogenic and high-low temperature equipment

Examples include cryogenic devices, low-temperature gas systems and high-temperature process equipment, where PTFE’s wide temperature range is well suited.

- Low-friction precision motion mechanisms

PTFE seals are advantageous for equipment requiring low breakaway friction, low running friction and smooth motion.

Nevertheless, one non-negligible limitation of PTFE is creep and deformation under sustained load. Unfilled PTFE tends to deform under load. For high-pressure and high-speed applications, filler modification or proper structural design is normally required to mitigate this issue.

 IV. When to Prioritize PU?

PU is usually the better option when the core requirements are wear resistance, high pressure, extrusion resistance and high-frequency reciprocating motion.

Typical applications:

- Hydraulic cylinders

PU is widely adopted for piston and rod seals in hydraulic cylinders of construction machinery, injection molding machines, mining equipment and agricultural machinery.

- Pneumatic equipment

- High-frequency reciprocating motion

- High-pressure hydraulic equipment

- Construction machinery

Hydraulic systems of excavators, loaders, cranes and other heavy-duty machinery demand high wear and impact resistance for seals, where PU is a common material selection.

For high-performance hydraulic and dynamic sealing, PTFE and PU are not necessarily competitors. Combinations of PTFE, PU, O-rings, PEEK and other materials allow each component to undertake separate functions such as low friction, elastic compensation, wear resistance and anti-extrusion protection. This delivers sealing solutions better matched to specific working conditions than single-material designs.

For seal manufacturers, professional material selection is not about answering “which is better, PTFE or PU”. Instead, materials and structures are determined based on pressure × speed × temperature × medium × motion type, to achieve stable friction, controlled wear and consistent service life of seals under real operating conditions.
