In hydraulic, pneumatic and fluid sealing systems, rubber O-rings serve as the primary basic sealing components thanks to their simple structure, reliable sealing performance and broad compatibility. However, rubber-only O-rings have inherent performance limitations. Under high pressure, pressure cycling or conditions with large clearances, they are prone to extrusion, nibbling and shear damage, which directly cause equipment leakage, pressure loss and downtime. As a dedicated protective part paired with O-rings, the PTFE backup ring fundamentally resolves O-ring extrusion issues and greatly raises the pressure rating and operational stability of the sealing assembly. It is an indispensable component for high-pressure sealing applications.
1. Core Failure Mode of Bare O-Rings under High Pressure: Extrusion Damage
Rubber O-rings are flexible and low-hardness materials with poor resistance to deformation, making them suitable only for medium and low-pressure general applications. Assembly clearances inevitably exist between mating metal components and cannot be fully eliminated.
2. Working Principle of PTFE Backup Rings: Rigid Barrier against Extrusion
PTFE backup rings are manufactured from rigid PTFE polymer, which outperforms rubber in hardness, structural stability and deformation resistance. The backup ring itself does not perform the sealing function; its main role is to provide mechanical support and physical protection for the O-ring, blocking the root cause of extrusion failure.
Unlike rubber, PTFE does not undergo plastic deformation under pressure. It maintains excellent dimensional stability and can withstand long-term high-pressure shocks and cyclic pressure while retaining its limiting function without fatigue failure or permanent deformation.
3. PTFE Material Advantages for Severe High-Pressure Operating Conditions
Leveraging the outstanding physicochemical properties of PTFE and the dedicated design of backup rings, the overall pressure resistance of the sealing assembly is significantly improved to accommodate heavy-duty high-pressure and cyclic working conditions. Key benefits:
- Superior pressure resistance: A bare rubber O-ring typically withstands 70–100 bar. Fitted with a single PTFE backup ring, the sealing system can operate above 300 bar.
- Wear and fatigue resistance: PTFE features an ultra-low coefficient of friction and good self-lubrication. In dynamic reciprocating applications, it effectively reduces friction between the O-ring and metal groove, minimizing seal wear.
4.Conclusion
The PTFE backup ring is a critical protective component for O-ring sealing systems. It preserves all advantages of the original sealing configuration while compensating for the weaknesses of rubber O-rings in high-pressure service. By rigid physical restraint, it eliminates O-ring extrusion failure and substantially improves the assembly’s pressure rating, wear resistance and fatigue resistance. It enables conventional O-ring seals to operate under higher pressure and more demanding industrial environments, serving as an optimal lightweight solution to enhance high-pressure sealing reliability, extend equipment service life and reduce failure risks.
