BERLIN-The Swiss government has banned the import of most seal products, bringing its rules in line with those of the European Union.
On Friday, the Federal Council decided to ban the import of products such as whale fat, organs, fur and fur from April 1.
Items caused by hunting traditionally carried out by Inuit or other indigenous communities will be exempted and travellers will still be able to import seal products for personal use.
A government statement said that Switzerland\'s imports of seal products are \"very small\" and that the new rules are unlikely to have a significant practical impact.
Switzerland is not a member of 28 countries.
But it is surrounded by the EU and has close ties with the EU.
