Discussion on Damage Mechanism of Hydraulic Breaker Seals (Part 2)

2022-04-18

3. Quality and selection of seals

The reliability of the hydraulic breaker largely depends on the structural selection of the seal and the selection of the performance of the seal. The selection of breaker seals should take into account the characteristics of the reciprocating frequency of the breaker piston, high stroke and short stroke, as well as the compatibility of hydraulic oil and sealing materials, cylinder load conditions, extreme pressure, ambient temperature and other factors. Due to the characteristics of high frequency and short stroke, the lip of the seal is prone to high temperature and the working surface is not easy to build an oil film. At the same time, it is also necessary to consider that the working environment of the hydraulic breaker contains dust and impurities, so appropriate dust-proof seals should be selected in the planning to prevent dust and other contaminants from entering the system to pollute the oil, damage the seals and cause leakage.

Due to the special situation of the breaker cylinder, many ordinary cylinders use sealing materials and structures that cannot be used for the breaker cylinder. For example, the special seal of the breaker needs to withstand frequent pressure changes and high working surface temperature. The materials that need to be sealed are: Stronger impact resistance, compression resistance, tensile strength, high temperature resistance and other physical performance parameters, seals with these properties often require optimized material formulations and higher processing technology.

At present, there are many poor quality seals circulating on the market. These seals are often common industrial oil cylinder sealing materials, which will cause early failure of the seals and bring time and economic losses to users.

4. Improper use causes early failure of seals

The service life of the hydraulic breaker has a great relationship with the user's operation, mainly in the following aspects:

(1) The hydraulic oil should not be changed for a long time.

The oil is an organic polymer, and its composition and viscosity will change greatly after long-term use. After long-term use, there are often impurities generated by mechanical wear and brought in by the outside world. Once these impurities are wedged into the gap between the seal or the piston and the cylinder , it can cause seal damage and piston strain.

(2) Use hydraulic oil of wrong type or unqualified quality.

Different types of hydraulic oil have different viscosities at different temperatures. The working temperature of the breaker is higher than that of ordinary oil cylinders, and the high temperature viscosity of hydraulic oil that does not meet the requirements is low. Unqualified oil products often contain too much moisture, and the PU seals in the breaker are generally easily hydrolyzed, resulting in a decrease in sealing performance.

(3) Dust and grit cause early wear of seals.

Improper maintenance of the breaker or underwater work can easily cause dust and grit to penetrate into the body and cause early wear of the seals.

(4) Excessive working temperature and working pressure.

Due to the special structure of the breaker, the hydraulic oil return pipe often directly enters the oil tank without passing through the condenser. This structure is likely to cause excessively high hydraulic oil temperature during high-intensity work or a long-term continuous blow to an object. Rubber and PU materials Seals tend to age prematurely at high temperatures, resulting in seal failure and oil leakage. The working pressure of the breaker is generally 10-18MP, which is often lower than the working pressure of the excavator. If there is no decompression and stabilizer device or the device fails, the working pressure of the breaker will exceed the rated pressure, resulting in premature damage to the seal.

Good use and operation habits, regular replacement of hydraulic oil and filter elements to ensure the quality of oil products, can greatly improve the service life of the breaker, and the selection of high-quality seals and experienced maintenance masters can be more guaranteed.
