Comparison of the advantages and disadvantages of epoxy resin and polyurethane materials

The main advantage of epoxy resin is its amazing compressive strength, surpassing most concretes at pressures of 12,000 psi or higher. This is why epoxy is the choice for cracks that require structural repair. However, epoxy resins cure very slowly, often taking several hours to cure.

This can be an advantage as it allows time for the epoxy to flow into small crevices. On the other hand, if the backfill outside the wall has separated from the foundation, the epoxy may also flow out the back of the crack before it hardens.

Polyurethane foam should be used if there is concern about material leaking through the back of the crack. These elastomeric fast-curing foams are an effective alternative for applications involving only crack sealing (waterproofing) and not structural repair. Due to their elastic properties, they are able to accommodate slight concrete movements so the rod seal remains intact.

They also begin to harden and foam within minutes of injection. This reduces the chance that the material will still flow out of the injected crack in liquid form, and even if some do leak, the foam will fill the void.
